{"id":137,"date":"2016-02-25T19:38:23","date_gmt":"2016-02-25T23:38:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/knek-tek.me\/?p=137"},"modified":"2016-02-25T21:19:50","modified_gmt":"2016-02-26T01:19:50","slug":"benchmarking-the-beaglebone-black","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/knek-tek.me\/index.php\/2016\/02\/25\/benchmarking-the-beaglebone-black\/","title":{"rendered":"Benchmarking the Beaglebone Black"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two years ago I took a great seminar (graduate class) by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ece\/people\/faculty\/a-g\/ayse-coskun\/\" target=\"_blank\">Prof. Ayse Coskun<\/a> (her last name is pronounced &#8220;Josh-Kun&#8221;) that covered heterogeneous computer architectures, including things like server design incorporating different types of processors and single-die CPUs with multiple architectures on one chip. The Beaglebone Black is a much more exotic CPU than most hobbyists realize, since it is a &#8220;1.5.5 core&#8221; processor due to the two Programmable Realtime Units inside. These two sub-cores share a memory access bus with the main core but can function independently otherwise and over the past several years Texas Instruments has finally provided some support for programming these things.<\/p>\n<p>I wrote a report (included at bottom) looking at the throughput of the single-threaded, single-core main processor using the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phoronix-test-suite.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Phoronix<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/wwweb.eecs.umich.edu\/mibench\/\" target=\"_blank\">MiBench<\/a> test suites as well as a lot of bash scripting.<\/p>\n<p>Phoronix is fantastic because it is easy to use and produces the nice blue horizontal-bar graphs that are in my report. I highly recommend it.
